I was so excited to read this book because I LOVE the Reaper's series and I like Joanna's style of writing but I was not so much impressed with this book.
The story starts with Puck and Painter's release from prison. They are partying at an "ally" club. Puck realizes too late that he "partied" with a 16 year old Becca. As it turns out Becca's stepfather has been pimping her out to club members. In self-preservation, he rescues Becca from her stepfather and takes her back with him.
5 years later...Puck has stayed away from Becca but the club has looked out for her. She is going to school and working at a diner.
Puck wants her and can't get that 1 night out of his head. He decides to make his move but Becca isn't having any of it. She does not want anything to do with the MC lifestyle. While she is moving on her past just won't let go.
Her mom is constantly calling and begging for money. She is conflicted because it's her mom but there is something deceitful about her mom's situation. Through the push and pull between her mom, Becca is coming to realize she can't win with Puck. She wants him.
Puck and the club are going through their own issues with problems happening within their town. They are trying to save the town and the mine from a disastrous situation. Here comes the union with the Reaper's MC club.
It all comes to a head and bad guys are bad guys. Good guys win. Becca and Puck end up together and happy.
I liked this book but something was missing and I can not figure it out.
Some things I liked:
- I liked seeing character's from the Reaper's series pop in
- I LOVED getting a glimpse of Painter. He is not one of my favorites but he made a mistake (or, really missed his chance) regarding Em, Picnic's daughter. Getting to see that he does find somebody made me smile. I know he hasn't had a happy ending yet but I know that it is coming.
- Ok so, at this point it might seem weird that the 2 things I liked about this book had to do with the Reaper's but I really liked how the stories were intermixed, if that makes sense.
I find myself always going back to one of the Reaper's series when I need a fix, I am addicted to Ruger. I can't say that I will have the desire to reread this one at all.
